Who Watches The Blog-men? - Watchmen (2009)
If you believe the trailers and the hype, Watchmen is a movie twenty years in the making, and adapted from ‘the greatest graphic novel of our time.’ Writer Alan Moore has previously given us V For Vendetta, From Hell and The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but don’t expect that to be any indication of what you’ll see on the big-screen, as Moore’s distaste for Hollywood and the adaptations of his own comics has been well-documented. A far change from From Hell or V, Watchmen has much more in common with the Batman movies of the 80s and 90s, with camp costumes and shades of Bond shining through in a way that is both parody and highly reverent.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (2008)
Mortal Kombat? Batman? Superman? Fighting? In a video game? What’s not to like?”
At this point, expect a slap across the face to calm yourself down.
Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows (2008)
Just as comic-book based movies have proven uber-popular (though not always good or successful) over the past decade or so, so too have video-games based on the characters and worlds of comics, with Marvel and DC comics in particular leasing out their characters for both original games and marketing tie-ins. Some are successful with fans, critics and general sales alike (generally the original games); some, not so much.
Spider-Man: Web of Shadows falls somewhere squarely between the two: while not a direct sequel to the Spider-Man movies and their tie-in games, there’s enough similarities to make this an unofficial Spider-Man 4, while enough content to make the game relevant and help it stand on its own.
The Dark Knight (2008)
It’s somewhat appropriate that The Dark Knight is the only Batman film so far that doesn’t name its hero in the title: after all, this isn’t so much a film about Bruce Wayne/Batman (Christian Bale) as it is about Gotham City
Wanted (2008)
So you’ve spent years waiting, and it’s finally here: at last you have the chance to see Angelina Jolie in a film about…yep, knitting assassins. Cool, or what?
So that might be a somewhat tenuous description, but it’s true: Wanted features Jolie as Fox, an assassin.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Batman Begins really raised the bar a few years ago in terms of superhero remakes (okay, truth be told, nothing can ever beat Adam West’s shot at a Batman movie…but that was long before the 90s and Joel Schumacher gave us George Clooney in rubber in a way that would never wash out of our minds no matter how hard we tried.) To keep things fair though, I’ll try to avoid comparing The Incredible Hulk to Ang Lee’s Hulk (or the late 70s TV series) except for saying one thing: IT’S MUCH BETTER (to a certain extent…)
