Super Duper - Super Smash Bros Brawl (2008)
Anyone who remembers the early 1990s will probably remember the various different feuds that were going on at the time: we had Oasis versus Blur, we had Pogs versus Monsters In My Pocket and, of course, we had Nintendo versus Sega. Now, in 2008, those feuds have long since been and gone, but in case there’s some part of you that always wanted to know who would win if Nintendo’s Mario went toe-to-toe with Sega’s Sonic, then Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the game for you.
Wanted (2008)
So you’ve spent years waiting, and it’s finally here: at last you have the chance to see Angelina Jolie in a film about…yep, knitting assassins. Cool, or what?
So that might be a somewhat tenuous description, but it’s true: Wanted features Jolie as Fox, an assassin.
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Batman Begins really raised the bar a few years ago in terms of superhero remakes (okay, truth be told, nothing can ever beat Adam West’s shot at a Batman movie…but that was long before the 90s and Joel Schumacher gave us George Clooney in rubber in a way that would never wash out of our minds no matter how hard we tried.) To keep things fair though, I’ll try to avoid comparing The Incredible Hulk to Ang Lee’s Hulk (or the late 70s TV series) except for saying one thing: IT’S MUCH BETTER (to a certain extent…)
Teeth (2007)
There’s only a handful of polite ways to describe what Teeth is about, so we’ll cover the basics here and let you add them up yourself: it’s a horror film involving a girl with teeth and said teeth are not in her mouth (well, she does have teeth there, they’re just not the important ones). If you haven’t quite gotten there yet, one scene involves a hysterically screaming gynaecologist clutching a bleeding stump…got it yet?
Taking that as your starting poing, Teeth could be either incredibly crass or wonderfully intelligent, and thankfully it fits into the latter category, and it’s all due to little touches.
Superhero Movie (2008)
Occasionally a film can be forgiven for being incredibly bad if it’s the least bit entertaining. Unfortunately, Superhero Movie is no such film, falling into the absolutely terrible category of film-making.
Shutter (2008)
Shutter should be a simple enough story: newlyweds Ben and Jane Shaw (Joshua Jackson and Rachel Taylor) are in Tokyo, where photographer Ben is working on a fashion shoot. En route, the couple’s car hits a girl who vanishes from the scene moments later, but strange figures in Ben’s photographs lead the couple to believe they’re being haunted by the girl’s ghost. So where does it go wrong?
Mario Kart Wii (2008)
Do you know those people who have a tendency to lean to one side when playing a video game, as if it will urge their character around a corner faster? Well Mario Kart Wii was probably designed with people like this in mind. The latest outing from Nintendo’s speed-demon racing franchise comes hand-in-hand with their attempts to appeal to a market of gamers and non-gamers alike, effectively trying to be all things to everyone at the same time. The funny thing is that it actually works.
